Retriever Training Tests by James B. Spencer

Midwest Book Review :
Each chapter of James Spencer's Retriever Training Tests explains a different type of test (single marked retrieve, double
marked retrieve, triple marked retrieve, basic blind retrieve, suction blind retrieve) and builds on the work in the previous
chapters. Also included in each chapter are training tests that illustrate the environmental factors that can affect a dog's
performance included wind, terrain, cover, and placement and sequence of falls. Retriever Training Tests enables novices
to understand the subtleties of tests that they encounter at field trails, in hunting tests, in working certificate tests, and in
hunting. Part of each chapter is devoted to training tips and handling techniques. The training tips are not intended to
constitute a complete training program, but they do cover certain training problems that are not adequately covered
elsewhere in retriever training literature. The handling techniques are divided into hunting, hunting tests, and field trial
situations, and they are intended to help you make your dog's job easier by the manner in which you handle the various
retrieving problems. All this information is complemented by b/w photographs of retriever in action. Retriever Training
Tests is essential reading for all dog-owning sportsmen and hunting test judges.

 WATER DOG
by Richard Wolters

A Reader Quote "The Bible of Retriever Training
Richard Wolters understands how to train a retriever. More importantly he understands that retrievers very much want to retrieve, not be pampered friends. The key to the successes found by using his book is his focus on "fun" training after 7 weeks and the enforcement of those lessons in future weeks. Making lessons fun and practicing in repetition is everything and Richard Wolters recognized that fact. He understands that those weeks after a dog is taken from the breeder at 49 days are the most critical. It is where the dog gets "started" and allows the dog to *learn how to learn*. WATER DOG is a timeless reference on training a retriever."

Beyond Basic Dog Training
by Diane L. Bauman

One Readers Quote
"The greatest thing this book gave me is and overview of the entire training process. Diane outlines training with the goal of producing a well trained dogs for advanced competition. Diane has some great comments about how dogs think, and how we as handlers sometimes scare our dog out of work he or she might otherwise be perfectly happy to do for us.
She writes in nice short chapters which are easy to digest, and the book has many excellent photographs to illustrate the techniques described."

Family Dog
by Richard A. Wolters

"Family Dog has been especially important because it gives the general information on puppy selection and phases as well as training philosopy without pictures of birds in the dogs mouths or any information about using the dog for hunting. Which is great if you don't plan to hunt your dog, but also indespensible reading for your partner in training and raising a puppy in my case it is the perfect companion to Water Dog (also by Wolters).
My wife has read Family Dog and now understands the importance of many things in the training of
our new puppy which she wouldn't have if only given the choice to read Water Dog.
Family Dog is written well enough for a child to read as a primer for your new puppy (in fact Wolters Daughter is included as the primary trainer). "
